What is a Community Garden

A community garden is a large garden that is shared by a group of gardeners who each has a small plot that they tend growing their own food or flowers.  And just as the name "community garden" suggests, the garden belongs to and is governed by the members of garden. It is a shared adventure as gardeners learn and profit together from the fruits of their individual plots. The Big Ferry Road Community Garden is sponsored by Douglastown Community Church, located at 302 Big Ferry Rd in Douglastown. It was started the spring of 2012 and began with 10 plots and a lot zucchinis!  Since then we have grown to 40 plots but we still have a zucchinis! This garden is a great place for beginners and skilled gardeners to meet and to enjoy the privilege of gardening together!

Be Part of Our Community

To participate there is an annual membership fee of $20 a year to cover the cost of shared tools and other collective resources. Additionally, we ask that each member contributes 5 hours of volunteer labour a year to the care for the garden as a whole. Don't worry if you have little or no gardening experience! You can learn how to garden from other members of the garden and from workshops we will offer to help train new gardeners.

How to begin
